Dr. Willam O’Leary (2015)
Dr. William O’Leary, a graduate of CalSouthern's PsyD program, has dedicated his professional life to the prevention of child sexual abuse. As a therapist, he has counseled victims of sexual and other violent crimes for more than 20 years. Dr. O’Leary’s work in this area extends far beyond his practice, however. He serves on the New York State Alliance for the Prevention of Sexual Abuse. He also founded the Nassau County Sexual Abuse Task Force with the goal of educating the media and legislators to promote the enactment of more informed, research-based laws. Dr. O’Leary has made presentations before the New York State Assembly and has been successful in advancing a variety of legislation. He is currently working to ensure the passage of Erin’s Law. Passed in 23 states, Erin’s Law requires public schools to implement a prevention-oriented program to educate school personnel, parents and guardians about child sexual abuse, while giving children from pre-K through fifth grade age-appropriate tools for recognizing and reporting abuse or its danger signs. Thanks in large part to the efforts of Dr. O’Leary and his task force, the law has been passed in the New York Senate. He now focuses his efforts on the Assembly.
