Winner, 2014 CalSouthern President’s Award for Doctoral Project Excellence: Dr. Boyd Brooks

Dr. Boyd Brooks is a 2014 graduate of CalSouthern’s Doctor of Psychology program. A Missouri-based pastor and family therapist, Dr. Brooks works extensively with families where problematic parenting styles are common, which became the focus of his doctoral project.

Dr. Boyd’s doctoral project is titled Reactive Versus Responsive Parenting. His study examines the effects of exposure to unresolved conflict on children, especially the emotional distress related to reactive parenting. The resounding evidence points out repeatedly that children exposed to continual conflict because of this parenting style are at an elevated risk of depression and anxiety, aggressive behavioral problems and a lack of self-regulation, along with defensive behavioral tendencies in adolescence and adulthood and a repetition of dysfunctional interpersonal relationships.
