Pre-Baccalaureate Certificate in Leadership Courses

CalSouthern’s Certificate in Leadership is a 15-credit program, comprised of the following four required courses and the student’s choice of one of two available electives:

Required Courses

LDR 2150 Leadership Theory and Practice

Credits : 3

This course is organized around the characteristics and concepts governing leadership theories and practices. Leadership is a process. This process is a dynamic interaction that engages leaders, followers, and situations. The interactive nature of these three domains have become increasingly important in recent years and can help the learner to better understand the changing nature of leader-follower relationships and the increasingly greater complexity of situations leaders and followers face. The learner will focus on how good leadership makes a difference, plus, how it can be enhanced through the greater awareness of how these factors influence the leadership process.

  • Summarize the differences between leadership as a science and leadership as an art.
  • Define the concept of leadership.
  • Analyze the various factors and characteristics that prompt leadership.
  • Demonstrate the various measures for judging leadership performance.
  • Explain impacts of influence on leadership.
  • Explain men and women opportunities in competing for leadership roles.
  • Explain the concept of “lonely at the top.”
  • Explain the role of perception and emotion in leadership.
  • Explain the benefits that arise from having a good coaching or mentoring program.
  • Evaluate course concepts critically and competently through interaction with Learners and Faculty Mentor
  • Practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology.
