CalSouthern’s Certificate in Leadership is a 15-credit program, comprised of the following four required courses and the student’s choice of one of two available electives:

LDR 2490 Nonverbal Communications in Leadership

Credits : 3

Research studies have shown that between sixty-five and ninety-three percent of in-person communication involves nonverbal messages. It is paramount that good leaders understand how to both interpret and send the proper nonverbal cues to their listening audience. This course focuses on the important characteristics of nonverbal communications, such as the basics of nonverbal communications, how to properly send and receive nonverbal information, the impact of personal territory and space, projecting the proper physical characteristics, effective vocal cues, and the use of nonverbal communications on a daily basis.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Define the meaning of nonverbal communications.
  • Interpret the role of nonverbal communications in the total role of the communications process.
  • Describe the role of nonverbal communications over evolutionary time.
  • Demonstrate how to send and receive nonverbal communication messages and properly interpret them.
  • Illustrate the value of coding and decoding nonverbal communications messages and cues.
  • Explain the role of the external environment on basic human communications and its effects on nonverbal communication factors.
  • Describe how territory and personal space impact nonverbal communication messages.
  • Discuss the role of physical characteristics on human communications.
  • Analyze the impact of gestures and posturing in sending nonverbal messages.
  • Explain the message that human touch relays to other individuals.
  • Summarize the Impact and effects of face-to-face nonverbal messages.
  • Discuss the role of eye contact in projecting various nonverbal messages.
  • Describe how tone and vocal cues impact the delivery of the human message.
  • Examine how individuals interpret our nonverbal messages based on various projected
