In February 2015, the Evolution of Addiction Treatment conference will be held at the Westin Los Angeles Airport Hotel. I, along with Dr. Bob Weathers and recent PsyD graduate Dr. Katheryn Whittaker, will be presenting. The topic of our presentation is “Motivational Interviewing: A Practical Application for Special Populations.”
Motivational interviewing, as described by the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, is a form of collaborative conversation for strengthening a client’s own motivation and commitment to change. It is a person-centered counseling style for addressing the common problem of ambivalence about change by paying particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen an individual’s motivation for and movement toward a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.
Our presentation will explore how to use motivational interviewing when addressing specific addiction populations in treatment. Participants will gain an understanding of basic concepts of motivational interviewing, as well as its effectiveness, through a brief review of current research and program design. We will outline specific steps on how to use this treatment approach with clients dealing with substance abuse issues, and we’ll also take an in-depth look at sexual addiction, eating disorders and working with couples.
Through interactive participation and role play, participants will learn how to increase their therapeutic skills, as well as how to utilize motivational interviewing with these specific populations. We will discuss basic treatment techniques, including specific lines of questioning, use of affirmation, and reflective listening interventions for clients dealing with various addictions, including substance and sexual addictive behaviors. Participants will also practice basic techniques of motivational interviewing to use with clients—including resistant clients—during the different phases of treatment.
I hope you will consider attending this conference, especially if you work with these populations or intend to work with these populations when you complete your degree. It’s also a great opportunity to network with your peers and professionals within the field of addiction.
