University's Master Lecture Series Continues with Presentation and Book Signing

CalSouthern's Master Lecture Series continues on Friday, September 16, when the university hosts Dr. Linda Fischer who will deliver a lecture titled “Breaking the Cycle of Violence Against Women.” A writing advisor in the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education, Dr. Fischer is the author of the acclaimed book Ultimate Power, Enemy Within the Ranks, the story of Dr. Fischer's triumph over a sexual assault she suffered while an officer in the military.

“I wrote the book because I had no sense of justice from the system,” says Dr. Fischer, who will be signing copies of Ultimate Power at the event. “I wanted to share my story—and I encourage other victims to share theirs—so that those who are suffering in silence know that they don't walk alone.”

A gifted speaker and passionate advocate for victims of sexual assault, Dr. Fischer will outline the scope of the alarmingly pervasive problem of sexual assault in the military as well as the private sector, analyze some of the common psychological characteristics shared by the perpetrators, and discuss how they operate—and why they so often get away with their crimes. She will also detail “bystander training,” which represents a significant shift in the way society is dealing with sexual assault—a shift that has Dr. Fischer optimistic.

“We're beginning to recognize that the solution to the problem does not rest on the shoulders of women,” she says. “We now understand the importance of educating men regarding sexual assault and giving them tools to appropriately intervene when they recognize red flags in certain social situations.”

The lecture—which begins at 10:00 a.m.—is free to the public and can be attended at CalSouthern's Irvine, CA headquarters or via live webinar. To register for this event, simply send an email to [email protected] indicating whether you will be attending live or online.
