All Army Active Duty Enlisted, Officers, and Warrant Officers are able to utilize the Army tuition assistance program, including the Army Reserve and National Guard when called to active duty. The Army tuition assistance education program covers up to 100 percent of your tuition, not to exceed $250 per semester credit hour, or $4500 per fiscal year.

California Southern University understands that you may become deployed with little notice. As a military-friendly school, this will not affect your current degree plan. You can contact your Enrollment Advisor if a deployment interferes with your course completion so we can pause your degree program until you have ample time to complete.

The Army Tuition Assistance Program:

The Army tuition assistance program offers funding up to $4500 per fiscal year to those who qualify. Your Army TA may cover 100 percent of all tuition and all fees up to $250 per semester credit hour or $166 per quarter credit. Currently all undergraduate programs at CalSouthern are under $250 per semester credit hour, so no additional financing is needed to cover the cost of your tuition.

COMMON QUESTIONS REGARDING THE ARMY TUITION REINBURSEMENT PROCESS:

Q: What happens if I have to withdraw from a course due to an unforeseen military obligation?

A: We fully understand your situation and that your first commitment is to the military. If you need to withdraw from your current course, please contact CalSouthern first so that we can pause your degree program. You will need to then go to the GoArmyEd portal and officially withdraw from the course you are taking. If you fail to officially withdraw on GoArmyEd, you will be responsible for paying back the Army tuition assistance funds you have used for the course.

Q: I was denied tuition assistance, what should I do next?

A: Every situation is different, but it could be something as simple as registering for a course that starts more than 60 days in the future. If you feel you have done everything stated in the denial emails you have received please give us a call so we can work with you to solve the problem.

Q: How to Request Your Official Army AARTS Transcripts

A: The Army uses the AARTS (American Council on Education Registry Transcript Service) to properly document any certified military training and or credits earned. We will use your official AARTS transcript to determine if any courses or past military experience qualifies for credit transfer into your degree program at California Southern University.

Your official AARTS transcripts will contain the following information: current rank, military status, time in service, standardized test scores, all formal military courses taken as well as skill identifiers (ASI) and skill qualification identifiers (SQI). It is important that you provide CalSouthern with a current AARTS transcript so we can evaluate it for maximum credit transfer.

Steps to Request your Official Army AARTS Transcripts:
  1. Visit the official AARTS website at https://aartstranscript.army.mil/.
  2. Find the official transcript button on the homepage and fill in the following information: social security number, date of birth and your Basic Active Service Date (BASD) or Pay Entry Basic Date (PEBD). If you are in the Guard or Reserves, use your PEBD.
  3. Choose California Southern University from the drop-down of schools and submit your request.

You can also request your AARTS transcript via email. Send your full name, the last four digits of your social security number, date of birth and BASD or PEBD information to hrc.tagd.aarts@conus.army.mil.
