School of Business Graduates Share Their Experiences

The students of California Southern University are a diverse and successful group of accomplished individuals. While most of our students reside in the United States, many others live around the world. They represent a wide variety of professions and educational experiences, they also share the challenges of balancing careers, personal lives, and education.

Many of our students choose CalSouthern because their travel, job and family commitments interfere with traditional campus-based courses and fixed class schedules. Other students choose CalSouthern because they realize that professional career success depends on what you know and the degrees you have earned.

CalSouthern is known for providing an adult approach to higher education. Our goal is to serve the individual needs of our student's lifestyles through online distance learning, providing the individual attention they need to ensure success.

See below to meet just a few of our students and graduates and read what they have to say about their experiences at CalSouthern.

Graduate - 2008

Sylvain Authier is no stranger to higher learning, having earned numerous degrees from many prestigious learning institutions. He was researching a university were he could earn the Doctorate that would set him apart and give him the credibility he needed for his high profile business. The distance learning format offered at CalSouthern fit his schedule and the quality of the education met his requirements for the D.B.A. program he was looking for. The long distance and time zone difference did not prevent him from keeping in touch with his Faculty Mentors via phone and email and he was able to complete his degree in just 2 years!

Darrell Allin , B.B.A.
School of Business

Graduate - 2008

I have served a number of businesses over the years, working at many levels from Machinist through President & CEO. I have accumulated many college credits over the years, but until recently never completed a degree program.

All was well with my career until a few years ago. I had worked very hard over the years, and I had worked through many corporate levels, finally reaching President & CEO. My broad experience gave me a unique perspective that allowed me to achieve results. A few years back, I decided (unwisely in retrospect) that the next step was to work with a private equity company and be part of acquisition & merger work. That lasted only a year, and I was on the street looking for a job. In all my years of working, I had never been out of a job for 10 minutes. Yet, when put on the streets as I was, I realized quickly (via rejections by prospective employers) that my formal education didn't match my title or long-term goals.

During that time of being unemployed, I began looking at opportunities to complete my formal education. I looked at many schools, and I did a lot of research. Thankfully, I found CalSouthern University. Before deciding to enroll I must have asked the staff a thousand questions. The staff was so kind, patient and encouraging as I wrestled with the decision.

At last I got started at CalSouthern. From initial enrollment through degree completion, the process was made simple. My focus was therefore entirely on academics and not on course logistics or administrative paperwork. I enjoyed each course tremendously, and I am forever changed. All of the instructors are absolutely first rate, and all brought meaningful real world experience to the table. I have gained lifelong friends through CalSouthern, and I certainly have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge & tools that I can apply to my career. Ultimately, I completed my Bachelor's in Business Administration. I have since been working in Sales Management & Business Development, with opportunities to grow further perhaps through consulting work, or other opportunities.

My experience was so productive, I have returned to work through my MBA! My focus will be on International Business. I have worked extensively in Asia developing suppliers, so I look forward to finding ways that I can leverage on that experience, while growing my skills and achieving future career goals.

Many thanks to all the wonderful people at CalSouthern. I am so proud to be a graduate of CalSouthern, and I am proud to be continuing my education as I work toward my MBA!

I'd be happy to discuss my experiences at any time. I can be reached at dkellyallin@gmail.com

Charlotte Belt, B.B.A.
School of Business

Graduate - 2006

My name is Charlotte A. Belt. Currently, I wear two “professional hats.” First, I work for KPMG in downtown Dallas as a Practice Administrative Supervisor in our Advisory Practice. I have 24 years of business administration experience with KPMG and BearingPoint. Second, I am Vice President of QuinLab Consulting, in Dallas, that provides consulting services for the oil and natural gas exploration industry. Also, I am a past or present member of several professional organizations, such as the American Marketing Association, American Management Association, Project Management Institute, and Delta Epsilon Tau International Honor Society.

As my husband, John, discussed in his bio, graduating from California Southern University has become an “academic family tradition!” I graduated “summa cum laude” in 2005 from CalSouthern University with an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies. I enjoyed my “CalSouthern experience” so much, I immediately started my Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, concentrating in marketing and management, graduating “summa cum laude” for a second time in 2006. Obtaining my AA and BBA Degrees from CalSouthern was very demanding, yet, extremely fulfilling from both a professional and personal prospective. The academic knowledge obtained from my “CalSouthern experience” provided me the tools and skills to effectively deal with the daily demands and responsibilities for both of my business professions. Also, obtaining my degrees made it possible for future advancement within KPMG.

My relationship and experience with Professor Kim Stanton, Dr. Grimes, and especially Professor Saunders were extremely rewarding and personally fulfilling. I will carry those memories with me for years. The annual CalSouthern graduation ceremony is truly an emotional and moving experience that represents the “crown jewel” of your accomplishments. My husband and I have made “the journey” three times (2002, 2005, and 2006) from Dallas to Orange County for the event. We enjoyed and loved every minute of the graduation ceremony and only regret the ceremony did not last longer. I encourage all CalSouthern students to attend their graduation ceremony. You will not regret your decision. I totally agree with my husband, in that, CalSouthern is truly at the leading edge of “eLearning” in adult education for business professionals desiring to expand and develop their skills or move into a new and challenging career.
