Single Master’s-Level Business Courses

At CalSouthern, students are permitted to enroll in a course at the master’s level without committing to a particular degree program. It’s a great option for students who want to:

  • Get a feel for online learning at CalSouthern before pursuing a master’s degree
  • Earn credits that can be applied toward a master’s degree at CalSouthern or another institution*
  • Gain master’s-level knowledge and expertise in a topic of interest

Choose any master’s-level course offered by CalSouthern’s School of Business. You’ll find a vast selection of subjects available, on topics as diverse as finance, human resources, change management, international business and project management.

Getting started is a quick and simple process. No entrance exams are required and you don’t have to provide official transcripts. A bachelor’s degree is not required to take master’s-level courses. (However, if you wish to enroll in CalSouthern’s Master of Business Administration program, a bachelor’s degree is a prerequisite.) Courses start every month; you’ll never encounter a closed course or waiting list!

*Although credits from regionally accredited institutions like CalSouthern are readily accepted by other universities, acceptance is at the discretion of the receiving institution.

HCA 86812 Quality Control in Healthcare

Credits : 3

This course explores the healthcare industry’s need to reduce costs and improve quality. Healthcare delivery systems face a similar crisis, as did the U.S. automobile industry many years ago; as healthcare consumers become more knowledgeable about healthcare costs and quality measurements associated with their products and services. Students will examine performance improvement methods, process control, medical informatics, six sigma, and statistical analysis for improving healthcare services.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Discuss risk medical errors, healthcare costs, plus, Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Explain value proposition and standards of quality healthcare.
  • Explore the quality and cost of healthcare services.
  • Explore performances of healthcare organizations, “80-20 rule,” and stages of effective management.
  • Describe organizations that deploy quality improvement teams, crew resource management, and methods to generate ideas in groups.
  • Discuss manageable lists of task from brainstorming, plus, management and physician team success.
  • Define value proposition, process analysis, and value stream.
  • Apply value added and non-value added concepts.
  • Explore basic flow charts.
  • Explain quality metric, activity based costing, and compliance measures important to healthcare.
  • Examine CAHPS, clinical Microsystems, and EHR systems.
  • Discuss data warehouses in healthcare quality systems, predictive modeling and data mining approaches.
  • Evaluate systems thinking, Deming’s Theory of Profound Knowledge, and theory control charts.
  • Discuss major categories of control charts and special cause/common variations.
  • Explore statistical process controls and use of control charts.
  • Discuss characteristics of TPS, autonomation, and kaizen event.
  • Explain “kanban,” CPG development, maintenance cycle, and randomized controlled trials.
  • Explore the major steps in the “plan phase” of PDSA and “never events.”
  • Discuss Six Sigma, meaning of Six Sigma, and the assumptions underlie Six Sigma.
  • Examine three Six Sigma metrics, voices of Six Sigma, and basic Six Sigma equations.
  • Review “5 why’s,” DMADV, and DMAIC.
  • Discuss Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
  • Explain why the award is important to the business world of the United States.
  • Introduce self and explain course expectations.
  • Integrate the course concepts through interaction with other Learners and your Faculty Mentor.
  • Access information efficiently and effectively.
  • Evaluate information critically and competently.
  • Allow the student to elaborate and expand their knowledge on an area of interest discussed during the course.
  • Provide the student an opportunity to research a PQRI Measure concept or topic to expand their knowledge of the healthcare profession.
