CalSouthern’s faculty mentors are talented, highly credentialed educators who are also experienced practitioners in the subject areas in which they teach—and they use that practical experience to help learners apply the concepts they learn to current, real-world issues.

A common misconception about online learning is that it is impersonal, that learners are on their own. At CalSouthern, that could not be further from the truth. Barnaby Barratt, PhD

Faculty Mentor, Behavioral Sciences

Human sexuality, somatic psychology ("body psychotherapy"), psychodynamic approaches, cross-cultural psychology, creativity

Dr. Barratt has been practicing since 1975, specializing in psychoanalysis, sexuality counseling and somatic psychology. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Professional Psychology, a fellow of the American Psychological Association and of the American Academy for Psychoanalysis in Psychology, as well as a clinical member of the International Psychoanalytic Association and of the European Association for Body Psychotherapy.

Dr. Barratt received his first doctorate in psychology and social relations from Harvard University and his second doctorate from the Institute of Advanced Study of Human Sexuality. His post-doctoral clinical training was at the University of Michigan's Neuropsychiatric Institute and for many years he was a Professor of family medicine, psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences at Wayne State University in Detroit.

Dr. Barratt is the author of nine books and more than seventy scientific and professional articles and reviews. He has served on the editorial boards of almost a dozen national and international scholarly and scientific journals. He currently lives and practices in Johannesburg, South Africa, and holds honorary appointments at several universities.
