Federal Loan Deferment

California Southern University is approved by the United States Department of Education for the deferment of all federal student loans. Students at CalSouthern who qualify are now able to defer all federal loans from their previous education*. Our university will be listed in the next edition of the Directory of Postsecondary Institutions published by the U.S. Department of Education

Current students at California Southern University who qualify are now able to defer all federal loans from their existing federal loans from previous educational intuitions.

For more information on in-school loan deferments, you can visit the Federal Student Aid website or the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) website.

Below you will find the general in-school deferment process broken into easy-to-follow steps. However, please note that each loan servicer may have a process that varies from the information below. Regardless of the process that your loan servicer requires, it is the Learner’s responsibility for ensuring that they follow their loan servicer’s process and meet their requirements for in-school deferments. The Registrar’s Office can assist with the completion of any loan servicer required forms and can provide a letter verifying the Learner’s current status with the university, when asked.

The authority to approve or deny in-school deferment requests lies solely with the loan servicer, not with CalSouthern or its staff. CalSouthern will assist with completing any information a learner’s loan servicer requires and, when appropriate to do so, will update the learner’s information in the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS).

General In-School Deferment Process

Contact Your Student Loan Servicer

CalSouthern does not have the authority to render decisions on in-school deferments. That authority lies solely with your loan servicer. Therefore, the first step in the in-school deferment process is always for you to contact your loan servicer to inquire about their requirements for in-school deferments. When you contact your loan servicer, you will commonly be told one of three things.

1. Complete In-School Deferment Form

Some loan servicers will require that students complete in-school deferment forms. When completing the forms, please make sure you complete sections 1-3 and that you sign and date the form at the end of section 3. Typically, these forms require information from your current school. If this is the case with your loan servicer, please include those forms with your signed and completed CalSouthern In-School Deferment Information Form. These forms should be sent to the CalSouthern Registrar’s Office. You can access the in-school deferment form here.

2. Enrollment Verification

Some loan servicers may not require forms, but instead will ask for a letter of verification from your current school verifying your enrollment and student status. Please forward that request along with a completed and signed CalSouthern In-School Deferment Information Form to the CalSouthern Registrar.

3. National Student Load Data System (NSLDS) Update

Some loan servicers may not require any paperwork up front, but will request that your current school certify your information in the NSLDS system online. If this is the case, please send an email with that request and attach a CalSouthern In-School Deferment Information Form. Completing this form will provide the CalSouthern Registrar with the information that is required to update in NSLDS.

CalSouthern In-School Deferment Information Form

Regardless of what your loan servicer requires, CalSouthern requires that an In-School Deferment Information Form be completed and signed. The form should then be submitted to the CalSouthern Registrar by email to: [email protected] or by fax to: (714) 882-7866.

Processing by the CalSouthern Registrar

Once all required documentation is received, please allow five business days for the CalSouthern Registrar to process your information and properly certify you in the NSLDS.

Please note: The information that will be certified in the NSLDS regarding your student status at CalSouthern will be the status at the time all the required documentation is received.

Follow-Up

Once your information is certified in the NSLDS, if you would like to follow-up regarding the loan servicer’s decision regarding your in-school deferment request, please contact your loan servicer directly. CalSouthern does not have the authority to render decisions on in-school deferments. Those decisions are made solely by the loan servicer.
