Winner, 2015 CalSouthern President’s Award for Doctoral Project Excellence: Dr. Nancy Miller
In a career that has spanned 30 years, Dr. Nancy Miller has provided comprehensive mental health services to a wide range of clients across federal, state, international and private practice settings. She is a licensed professional counselor and licensed marriage and family therapist and currently maintains a private practice in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. Her areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, relationship conflicts, parenting concerns and adjustment to life’s transitions.
In addition to her private practice, Dr. Miller, a CalSouthern PsyD graduate, also works as a disaster mental health responder. She has provided mental health services in complex humanitarian crises including Operation Desert Storm, Hurricane Katrina, the Virginia Tech shootings and the Haitian earthquake.
It was her work in the field that inspired her doctoral project, titled Creating Opportunity after Crisis: Examining the Development of the Post-Earthquake Haitian Mental Health Care System. The project is a fascinating study of the challenges associated with meeting the extraordinary mental health needs, and bridging the substantial treatment gap, in Haiti following the tragic earthquake of 2010. It also examines the key practices which emerged during the transition from short-term response to the development of long-term, sustainable mental health care through the implementation of culturally relevant, community-focused and evidence-based practices.
