Title: “Breaking the Cycle of Violence Against Women”
Date: September 16, 2011
Presenter: Dr. Linda A. Fischer
Dr. Linda Fischer delivers a lecture titled “Breaking the Cycle of Violence Against Women.” A writing advisor in the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education, Dr. Fischer is the author of Ultimate Power, Enemy Within the Ranks, the story of Dr. Fischer’s triumph over a sexual assault she suffered while an officer in the military.
“I wrote the book because I had no sense of justice from the system,” says Dr. Fischer, who will be autographing copies of Ultimate Power at the event. “I wanted to share my story—and I encourage other victims to share theirs—so that those who are suffering in silence know that they don’t walk alone.”
A gifted speaker and passionate advocate for victims of sexual assault, Dr. Fischer will outline the scope of the alarmingly pervasive problem of sexual assault in the military and in the private sector, analyze some of the common psychological characteristics shared by the perpetrators, and discuss how they operate—and why they so often get away with their crimes. She will also detail “bystander training,” which represents a significant shift in the way society is dealing with sexual assault—a shift that has Dr. Fischer optimistic.
“We’re beginning to recognize that the solution to the problem does not rest on the shoulders of women,” she says. “We now understand the importance of educating men regarding sexual assault and giving them tools to appropriately intervene when they recognize red flags in certain social situations.”
