Description: Recovery from addiction disorders is a lifelong process of focused attention, utilizing the skills imparted by integrated treatment teams. This lecture will follow the historic evolution of the treatment of addiction to the present understanding that a comprehensive and integrative approach to addiction treatment consistently produces the best outcomes. The presenters will examine the role of certified addiction counselors in implementing this approach, and will also address the critical issue of how the field of addiction treatment will be impacted by health care reform.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will gain an understanding of the evolution of the field of addiction counseling and treatment in the United States.
  • Attendees will learn the foundations of an integrative approach to addiction treatment.
  • Attendees will be able to define the role of CAADAC-certified counselors in addiction treatment, as well as their qualifications and scope of practice.

Bio: Sara G. Gilman, LMFT, has been a licensed marriage and family therapist since 1986, specializing in the areas of trauma, addictions and performance enhancement with athletes and other performers. She is the owner and president of Coherence Associates, Inc., a counseling and consulting corporation in Encinitas, California, which offers an innovative outpatient addiction and trauma recovery program called, “Journey to Wholeness.” Graduating in 1983 from California State University, Fullerton with a master’s in clinical psychology, Ms. Gilman holds fellowship status with the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, is an EMDR-approved consultant and past president of the EMDR International Association Board of Directors. She is currently a doctoral student at California Southern University.
