CalSouthern alumnus honored at university’s 38th annual commencement ceremony
Irvine, California—August 19, 2016— California Southern University has named Dr. Gregory Mabry the recipient of the 2016 CalSouthern Difference Award, presented annually to a CalSouthern alumnus who has made a difference in his or her profession, field of study or local community through distinguished work, scholarship, innovation or service. Dr. Mabry was presented with the award at the university’s 2016 commencement ceremony, held at the Irvine Barclay Theatre on August 6.
A major in the U.S. Army and a 12-year combat veteran, Dr. Mabry is a Behavioral Science Officer and Deputy Chief for the Department of Behavioral Health, stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. In this position, Dr. Mabry is responsible for the direct patient care of more than 30,000 soldiers and their families. A 2012 graduate of CalSouthern’s Doctor of Psychology program, he has also worked to enhance the mental health resiliency of soldiers throughout the training, deployment and redeployment cycles, and has developed plans to diagnose and treat high-risk solders, mitigating suicidal risk factors among this population.
Dr. Mabry educates civilians and fellow clinicians about post-traumatic stress disorder and other topics ranging from video game addiction to social psychology. He has been published in academic journals, addressing subjects including the combat soldier’s internal struggle to seek mental health care, and the psychological assessment of military leaders upon returning from combat zones.
Dr. Mabry recently received a faculty nomination to teach at West Point. He has also been nominated by the military as an Army Astronaut Candidate to NASA. Dr. Mabry also has been inducted into the National ROTC Hall of Fame, recognized as one of the best officers the Army has produced over the last 100 years.
“Dr. Mabry is the perfect embodiment of everything that CalSouthern—and the Difference Award—stand for,” says University President Dr. Caroll Ryan. “His technical, tactical, clinical and academic contributions to the Army are simply inspiring, and his positive impact on his fellow soldiers will continue for years to come.”
Dr. Mabry was presented with a commemorative plaque and an award of $2,500, to be used in furtherance of his dedicated work serving America’s service men and women.
