CalSouthern alumnus to receive honor at university’s 36th annual commencement ceremony
Irvine, California—June 24, 2014—California Southern University has named Judge David Widmaier the recipient of the 2014 CalSouthern Difference Award, presented annually to a CalSouthern alumnus who has made a difference in his or her area of practice, field of study or local community through distinguished work, scholarship, innovation or service. Judge Widmaier will be presented with the award at the university’s 2014 commencement ceremony, to be held at the Irvine Barclay Theatre on August 2, at 2:00 p.m.
Judge Widmaier is a justice court judge and magistrate in Pinetop-Lakeside, Arizona, first elected to the position in 2000. A graduate of CalSouthern’s Master of Science in Law program (magna cum laude, 2011), he has been re-elected four times and twice named Arizona Judge of the Year (2009, 2012) by the Arizona Justice of the Peace Association.
Judge Widmaier serves on numerous Arizona Supreme Court committees including the Arizona Judicial Council (Arizona’s highest judicial body other than the Arizona Supreme Court itself) and is the Arizona representative to the National Judges Association. He has served five times as president of the Arizona Justice of the Peace Association. He also is a faculty member and mentor judge for the Arizona Judicial College. Judge Widmaier, who served honorably in the United States Marine Corps at the end of the Vietnam War, is extremely active in the Pinetop-Lakeside community, where he lives with his wife.
“This is a tremendous honor,” says Judge Widmaier. “While it gives me great pride to receive this award, it is extremely humbling to follow the extraordinary people who have won it in years prior. I am grateful for my time at CalSouthern and for what my educational experience has brought to my life.”
“Judge Widmaier epitomizes everything the university—and this award—stands for,” says University President Dr. Caroll Ryan. “CalSouthern is so proud of his accomplishments and, more important, his character. His extraordinary talents on the bench, his dedication to the administration of justice, his sense of fairness and his humility have had an enormous impact on his community and his profession—and will continue to for years to come.”
