Psychology master's courses in the Master of Arts in Psychology program

The following master's level courses comprise CalSouthern’s Master of Arts (MA) in Psychology degree program. In order to fulfill educational requirements for licensure at the master’s level in California – MFT and/or LPCC – all required courses must be completed. Elective options are not available for this program. For licensure requirements in other states, please contact your applicable state board.

Required Core Courses

PSY 86514A Couples and Sex Therapy

Credits : 3
This course covers theoretical and applied foundations for the practice of couple counseling. A systemic framework is utilized to explore the assessment and evidence-based treatment of couple problems including sexual dysfunction. Cultural aspects, diversity issues, and legal and ethical factors are addressed in the context of couple therapy.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Evaluate course concepts critically and competently through interaction with Learners and Faculty Mentor
  • Integrate course concepts through the use of the Taylor Study Method
  • Recognize the neurobiological and genetic components of addiction
  • Analyze current theories of the etiology of the chemical addictions and process addictions
  • Construct and justify diagnosis, interventions and treatment plans
  • Apply current research on evidence based assessment and treatment of addiction
  • Consider the legal/ethical and cultural aspects related to addiction
  • Evaluate and incorporate emerging relevant technologies applicable to the field of psychology
  • Analyze and evaluate information critically and effectively
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior in regard to emerging relevant technologies applicable to psychology
