PSY 86502.1 Counseling Theories and Strategies

Credits : 3
This course focuses on the historical and current evidence-based theories and models of counseling. Emphasis is on the application of these techniques to a variety of clinical situations to improve, restore, or maintain healthy individual, couple and family relationships. It provides an opportunity to analyze case studies through a theoretical lens. Special consideration is given to the development of personal qualities intimately related to the counseling situation including integrity, sensitivity, flexibility, insight, compassion and personal presence.  

Learning Outcomes:
  • Evaluate course concepts critically and competently through interaction with Learners and Faculty Mentor
  • Integrate course concepts through the use of the Taylor Study Method
  • Distinguish between the major theories of psychotherapy
  • Critique and apply the intervention models of major theoretical figures
  • Analyze case studies by applying major theories for analysis
  • Integrate legal-ethical and cultural tenets of counseling and psychotherapy
  • Compile research on the current evidence based methods of psychotherapy
  • Evaluate and incorporate emerging relevant technologies applicable to the field of psychology
  • Analyze and evaluate information critically and effectively
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior in regard to emerging relevant technologies applicable to psychology
