The following master's level courses comprise CalSouthern’s Master of Arts (MA) in Psychology degree program. In order to fulfill educational requirements for licensure at the master’s level in California – MFT and/or LPCC – all required courses must be completed. Elective options are not available for this program. For licensure requirements in other states, please contact your applicable state board.

PSY 87547A Career Counseling

Credits : 3

This course provides Learners with an understanding of career development and career counseling. Theories of career development, sources of occupational information, and methods of career counseling are explored. Consideration is given to ethical and legal issues, culture, diversity, special populations, and contemporary trends. Learners are given the opportunity to develop an individual curriculum vitae (CV), cover letter, and career counseling position statement in preparation for practicum placement interviews.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Evaluate course concepts critically and competently through interaction with Learners and Faculty Mentor
  • Analyze the major theories of career development
  • Synthesize information about the structure of occupations as well as individual and societal issues in career development, including multicultural and gender issues
  • Analyze the major sources of career and educational information available through the Internet, computer-based guidance systems, and printed materials
  • Evaluate the administration and interpretation of printed and computer-based assessments of career interest, beliefs, and values
  • Integrate career development theory and assessment results with career counseling interventions
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior in regard to emerging relevant technologies applicable to psychology
