Striking a work-life balance has never presented so many challenges for nursing professionals. California Southern University’s School of Nursing held an interactive discussion about wellness.
This event’s speaker featured Department Chair, Johanna Bruner, MS, RN, FNP. With years of experience working in the field, Johanna’s insight laid the foundation for a productive discussion to manage the pressures of working in a post-pandemic healthcare environment.
Live Event Highlights
This live event covered several important topics in nursing today, including the urgent need for nursing professionals. Johanna discussed how enrollment in nursing programs is not on pace with demand, and there are not enough faculty to instruct these programs. Job stress is also contributing to growing instances of early retirement among healthcare workers. That, combined with the ongoing pandemic-associated stress, has led to a greater need for nursing professionals.
The event also dived deeper into how organizations are addressing provider wellness. Topics included position statements on diversity, inclusion, and equity across the healthcare continuum; making leaders more accessible; and having a strong focus on undoing the wrongs of the past to ensure an inclusive future.
Lastly, an open discussion led to conversation about the many ways nursing professionals can achieve personal wellness in their own lives. Several great ways were suggested, including journaling, taking a slow walk, communicating with your support system, learning to say no, and studying something that is outside of your work area.
This event was an excellent opportunity for individuals who want to develop the tools and skills they need to sustain personal wellness in a changing healthcare environment and for those who are looking to start or advance their careers in nursing.
