COSTA MESA, Calif. (May 5, 2020) – California Southern University is celebrating National Nurses Week, Nurses Month and the Year of the Nurse and Midwife in 2020 by saluting the millions of nurses and healthcare workers around the world who are tirelessly working on the front lines during COVID-19.
In addition to offering a series of video and social media resources honoring its own and other nurses and nursing students, the Costa Mesa, Calif.-based, 100% online university is releasing a list of health myths and not-often-heard insights about the coronavirus from Johanna Bruner, MS, RN, FNP, department chair of CalSouthern’s School of Nursing.
The special content includes original videos thanking CalSouthern nursing students, faculty and alumni, as well as nurses everywhere, currently tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, plus social spotlights on members of the extended CalSouthern nursing family who are making a difference.
The video and social resources are available on CalSouthern’s YouTube and Facebook pages beginning May 6. New content will be added throughout the month.
National Nurses Week is recognized by the American Nursing Association (ANA) and other organizations internationally as May 6-12, 2020, culminating with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The week is part of a larger celebration of nurses that includes the designations of May as Nurses Month by the ANA, May 19 as Certified Nurses Day by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and 2020 as Year of the Nurse and Midwife by the World Health Organization.
CalSouthern has awarded online Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science on Nursing (MSN) degrees to Regitered Nurses (RNs) since 2018.
According to Bruner, who was previously director of cardiology services at UCLA before coming to CalSouthern in 2017, there are a number of commonly held myths surrounding the coronavirus that need correcting. “Myths drive fear and the best way to combat fear is to know myth from truth,” she said.
Myth #1: You don’t need to sterilize common household items.
Reality #1: Everyday items do need to be regularly washed and disinfected.
- Toothbrushes: Soak in mouthwash overnight.
- Shoes: Leave on the porch and clean soles at the end of the day.
- Pets: Clean your dog’s paws with pet wipes before entering the house. (You can try this on cats, too, if they will let you.)
- Cell Phone/Keys/TV Remote/Game Controller: Disinfect daily
Myth #2: A store-bought disinfectant works best to keep you safe.
Reality #2: Household detergent diluted with water is just as effective.
Myth #3: If you can hold your breath for 10 seconds, you don’t have the coronavirus.
Reality #3: This is simply not true and can be harmful. If you have the symptoms for COVID-19 as prescribed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), consult your physician and get tested.
Myth #4: Aiming a blow dryer up your nose can kill COVID-19.
Reality #4: This is also untrue and dangerous.
Myth #5: Drinking bleach will kill the coronavirus.
Reality #5: This could result in significant bodily injury and could be fatal.
