CalSouthern caters to the adult learner, who – on average is between 30 to 50 years young – and has specific educational needs. Relevance in their studies, independence, and self-pacing are key for this demographic as most are entrenched in a career with a desire for advancement or to change professions in later life. This learner wants to acquire new knowledge and finish their degree; they are rarely interested in interacting with a mentor, do not require hand-holding, are not desirous of building peer relationships, and want to move on to the next course speedily. To require that they work at the same pace as other classmates, to engage in peer interactions for its educational value, is to oppress our adult learners and thwart their active learning. Furthermore, our adult learners have careers, families, marriages, and professional commitments, in addition to pursuing a professional certificate or a degree; they have little time for the fun co-curricular or extra-curricular activities of “Camp College,” such as Mom and Dad provide for their 18-year old college kids.
Perfect example: Our graduate, Alison Curdt, PsyD, a professional golfer on the WPGA, did her homework on planes flying between competitions and in her room after a day of competing on the golf course. While many of her peers went to drink, have dinner, or party, Alison cared about her education – and still pursued her day job as a pro golfer. Her self-discipline resulted in a PsyD in Sports Psychology and a post-athletics career as a licensed psychologist. THAT is our typical learner, a person with a busy life who makes learning and advancement a priority whenever they can.
