Treating addiction can be a complex task for mental health professionals. Lifelong learner, Robin Fox, who completed her Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology and Master of Science (MS) in Psychology with a Concentration in Sport Psychology at CalSouthern, is helping recovering addicts in a unique way. She developed a special service known as the Fox Recovery Method (FRM) by incorporating her passion for fitness and experience as a competitive athlete with her specialty in addiction counseling.
The Fox Recovery Method is a service that aims to help people struggling with addiction by combining addiction treatment with physical fitness. Using a blend of strength coaching and evidence-based sport psychology and addiction counseling practices, this institution partners with drug and alcohol treatment centers to secure gym equipment and effectively implement strength training into addiction treatment settings.
Through her work, Robin Fox has been able to make an impact in the field of addiction recovery. Recently, her organization helped a rehab center in Santa Cruz, CA, by providing gym equipment and restoring over 1,000 pounds of powerlifting plates. She works with a diverse population ranging from those on probation and parole re-integrating into the community post-incarceration, older adults, competitive athletes, and others impacted by substance abuse. Robin has worked in various settings, including residential drug and alcohol treatment centers, detox centers, and outpatient mental health facilities.
Many of these successes and professional endeavors were made possible by her education at CalSouthern. Robin began attending college and declared her major as psychology at the young age of 14. After many unsatisfactory experiences at brick and mortar institutions resulting from limited ability to travel for athletic competitions, Fox gave CalSouthern’s online learning methodology a try. Due to the program’s flexibility, Robin earned her BA in Psychology.
Robin then came back and completed her Master’s degree at just 21. Now she is enrolled in the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program with the goal of further expanding her valuable work and pursuing upper management positions. Though she achieved many successes, her educational and professional journey was not always easy.
“Some of the obstacles I faced during my career involved clients passing away, especially by drug overdose. CalSouthern offered classes that prepare you for this reality. Psychology is a tough field to get into, but it is so rewarding when you can have an impact on someone’s life for the better. CalSouthern allowed me to refine and re-focus what I wanted to do. It is during my time at this University that I learned I wanted to specialize in Sport Psychology and touch people’s lives in both a counseling office and the weight room, where clients become phsycially and mentally empowered. If not for California Southern University, I wouldn’t have launched Fox Recovery Method last year. FRM has kept me going and encouraged me on my path even through the challenges because I can see the real impact it makes in client’s lives.” Says Robin.
